The Arrival Fallacy. Issue #6
Season One: Achievement.
How did I get here?
From Stuck to Sovereign
Act 1 - Diagnosis
There is a promise hidden inside almost every ambitious goal. We rarely say it out loud, but it's there.
When? ???
When I get there, things will feel different. When I earn more. When the business succeeds. When I finally get the promotion. When I have enough. When I become the person I'm trying to become.
Then? ???
Then I'll feel fulfilled. Then I'll feel confident. Then I'll feel at peace. The goal itself isn't the promise. The feeling attached to it is. And that's where the problem begins.....
The Arrival Fallacy
Psychologists call it the arrival fallacy. The belief that reaching a future milestone will create lasting happiness. We imagine that achievement will permanently change how life feels.
Then we arrive.... And discover that life is still life. The promotion comes with new responsibilities. The successful business creates bigger problems. The dream house still needs maintenance. The achievement is real. The transformation we expected often isn't. Not because the goal was wrong. Because we asked it to do something it was never designed to do.
Achievement can improve circumstances. It cannot permanently solve questions of meaning.
Three Stories
Arianna Huffington - built The Huffington Post into one of the most influential media companies in the world. In 2007, while running at full speed toward more growth and more recognition, she collapsed from exhaustion in her office and broke her cheekbone on the way down. By every external measure, the company was succeeding. She wasn't. Achievement answered: Can I build something the world pays attention to ? It couldn't answer: At what cost am I building it?
2. Michael Phelps - For most athletes, an Olympic gold medal is the dream. He won twenty-three. Yet after reaching the highest level of success in his sport, he spoke openly about feeling lost and struggling with purpose. Achievement answered: Can I do it? It couldn't answer: Who am I when the race is over?
3. Andre Agassi - In his autobiography, Andre Agassi made a confession that shocked many people. He wrote that he hated tennis for much of his career. Despite becoming one of the greatest players in the world, the success itself never resolved his complicated relationship with the game. Achievement and fulfilment turned out to be different conversations.
Why We Keep Falling For It.
Because the future is a convenient place to store hope. It's easier to believe fulfilment is waiting somewhere ahead than to ask harder questions in the present.
Questions like:
What if enough isn't a number?
What if confidence isn't something I earn?
What if fulfilment isn't hiding in the next chapter?
Most ambitious people don't realise they're chasing a feeling. They think they're chasing a goal.
📑The Quiet Ambition Exercise
The Hidden Promise Audit
Think about your biggest current goal. Write it down. Now complete this sentence: "When I achieve this, I will finally feel..."
2. Don't write what you'll have. Write what you'll feel. Freedom? Security? Respect? Confidence? Peace?
3. Now ask yourself: Where does that feeling already exist in my life today? Not fully. Not permanently. Just partially.
Most people discover they aren't really chasing the goal.
They're chasing a feeling they've postponed until the goal arrives. Recognition changes everything....
Because once you see the hidden promise, you stop making the future responsible for your emotional life.
The Quiet Choice
Instead of asking: What will happen when I arrive?
Ask: What feeling am I expecting to find there? Then look for evidence of that feeling today. The future may contain more of it. But it doesn't have exclusive rights to it.
Keep chasing the next milestone. Or learn how to inhabit the one you've reached.
REFLECTION
What goal are you currently pursuing?
And what feeling do you believe is waiting for you on the other side of it?
I'd genuinely like to know. Reply and tell me....
